Michael Hart in his book, put him as number one in the list of a hundred people who had an enormous influence in history. Hart said, “Muhammad was chosen to occupy the first position in the order of one hundred most influential world leaders, because he is the only man who had the greatest success in both areas at once: the religious and temporal”.

The success of the Prophet Muhammad has been much discussed by historians, historians both Islamic and Western historians. One side of the success of the Prophet Muhammad is his work as a trader (entrepreneur). However, the life of the Prophet Muhammad as traders and entrepreneurs received less attention among scholars on the momentum of the Prophet’s birthday. Therefore, in commemoration of the Birth of the Prophet Muhammad in 1436 H, we need to reconstruct the tijarah / business Prophet Muhammad, in particular business management, he applied so as to achieve spectacular success in his time.

Business Activities Muhammad PBUH

Prophet Muhammad’s PBUH reputation in the business world Muhaddits reported among others by Abdul Razzaq. When reaching adulthood, he chose jobs as a trader / entrepreneur. At the moment not yet have the capital, he became manager of trading the investors (Shohibul mall) is based on a revenue sharing system. A large investor Makkah, Khadijah bint Khuwailid ra, appointed him as manager to Habshah trade center in Yemen. His skills as an entrepreneur have brought huge profits for him and his investors. None of the types of businesses he dealt got the loss. He is also four times to lead an expedition to trade for Khadijah r.a Syria, Jorash, and Bahrain in the east of the Arabian Peninsula.

In the historical literature mentioned that around youth, the Prophet many described as Al-Amin or al-Siddiq and even had attended his uncle’s trade to Syria at the age of the children, 12 years.

More than twenty years of Prophet Muhammad active in the field of entrepreneurship (trades), so that he was known in Yemen, Syria, Basra, Iraq, Jordan, and trading cities in the Arabian Peninsula. However, in-depth description of the experience and skills of its trading less acquire observations during this time.

Since before becoming mudharib (fund manager) of property Khadijah r.a , he often did business trip, such as to the city of Busra in Syria and Yemen. In Halabiyah Sirah told, he could do four trips a trade for Khadijah, two to Abyssinia and two more to Jorasy, as well as to Yemen along Maisarah. He also did several trips to Bahrain and Abyssinia. Trade trip to Syria is traveling on behalf of Khadijah fifth, in addition to the sixth-alone journey, including a journey undertaken with his uncle when the Prophet was 12 years old.

In the mid 30s, he was heavily involved in the trade like most other merchants. Three of the travel trade Prophet after marriage, has been recorded in history: the first, a trade trip to Yemen, secondly, to Najd, and the third to Najran. Told also that in addition to the trips, the Prophet was involved in the affairs of big business, during the Hajj season, at festivals and Dhul-Majaz Ukaz trade. While the other seasons, the Prophet was busy taking care of wholesale markets of Makkah. In conducting its business Prophet Muhammad clearly applying management principles that accurate and reliable so that the business remains profitable and never lose.

Implementation of business management

Long before Frederick W. Taylor (1856-1915) and Henry Fayol raised the principle of management as a discipline, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. have implemented management values in life and business practices. He has been very well manage processes, transactions, and business relationships with all elements of the business as well as those who look at it. How would he manage his business, Prof. Afzalul Rahman in the book Muhammad A Trader, said:

“Muhammad did his dealing honestly and fairly and never Gave his customers to complain. He always kept his promise and delivered on time the goods of quality mutually agreed between the parties. He always Showed a gread sense of responsibility and integrity in dealing with other people “. In fact, he said: “His reputation as an honest and truthful trader was well established while he was still in his early youth”.

Based on the writings Afzalurrahman above, it is known that the Prophet Muhammad was a merchant who is honest and fair in making a business agreement. He never makes customers complain. He often keep its promise and hand over the goods in a timely message. He always showed a great sense of responsibility and high integrity with anyone. His reputation as an honest merchant and really has been widely known since he was young.

The basics of ethics and management of the business, has received religious legitimacy after he was appointed as the Prophet. The principles of business ethics who inherited increasingly justified academically at the end of the 20th century or the beginning of the 21st century. Principles of modern business, such as customer objectives and customer satisfaction (customer satisfaction), superior service (Service Excellence), competence, efficiency, transparency, fair competition and competitive, everything has become a picture of personal and business ethics Muhammad when he was younger .

In his day, he became a pioneer of trade based on the principles of honesty, fair business transactions, and healthy. He did not hesitate to socialize in the form of direct education and unequivocal statement to the traders. By the time he became head of state, law enforcement actually enforced to the businessmen naughty. He is also the introduction of the principle of “Facta Sur servanda” which we know as the main principle in the civil law and the agreement. In the hands of would assume there is a supreme power to carry out the transaction, which is built on the basis of mutually agreed “Surely transaction was (required) based on mutually agreed (ridha) ….” To act hoarding, he emphatically stated: “It is not the the hoarding of goods (ihtikar), except definitely wrongdoers (sin) !!! “

As a debtor, the Prophet Muhammad never showed default (default) to creditors. He often paid before the due date as it represents over 40 dirham loan from Abdullah Ibn Abi Rabi ‘. Often even greater returns given the value of the loan principal, as a tribute to the creditor. One time he had to borrow a camel young, then sent Abu Rafi ‘restore it with good camel that he was seven years old. “Give him the camel, because the most important is the people who make up the debt with the most excellent way” (HR.Muslim).

As mentioned earlier, that the residents of Makkah itself called him Al-Siddiq (truthful) and Al-Amin (trustworthy). Al-Amin designation is given to him in his capacity as a trader. Not surprisingly, Khadijah r.a was considered as a reliable partner and profitable, so he sent him on several trade trips to various markets in North and South with its capital. This is done sometimes with the contract costs (wages), capital trade and production sharing contracts.

In the world of management, the word actually used by Peter Drucker to define the meaning of efficiency and effectiveness. Efficiency means doing things right (do thing right), while effectiveness is doing the right thing (do the right thing).

Efficiency emphasis on austerity in the use of inputs to produce a given output. This effort is realized through the application of theoretical concepts and proper management. While the emphasis on the effectiveness of the level of achievement of the above objectives are realized through the implementation of leadership and the selection of appropriate strategies.

The principle of efficiency and effectiveness is used to measure the success of a business. This principle encourages academics and practitioners to find different ways, techniques and methods that can realize the level of efficiency and effectiveness as high. The more efficient and effective a company, the more competitive the company. In other words, in order to succeed in running business then Siddiq properties can be used as the basic capital remedy to apply the principles of efficiency and effectiveness.

So a bit of the life of the Prophet Muhammad in the business world is loaded with management values, wish the modern businessman, can imitate him so that they could be successful with commendable morals in business jets.
